  1. This building was made to analize. Beautiful diagrams. Do you see the difference between private and public spaces in the libraries?

  2. Yes, in this particular case of the Exeter library, the private spaces fall into Kahn's parti, which represent the three spaces; the core, the stacks and the reading/office sections along the outer walls. Starting from the center, it turns from public into private going towards the perimeter of the building. As you highlighted, one can start from the center, selecting a book from the stacks and taking it to the "light" along the perimeter walls for private study. The same principle applies to the office spaces; employees enter the building and take the grand stair case, which leads them into the center of the building. From there the employees walk toward their offices which are located along the perimeter walls. Every library has its own designated section, corner or even entire floors for private spaces. A prime example for this is the Seattle Public Library, where the entire second and 11th floor are private.

  3. it is interesting that you can enter from all openings on ground level, except the four openings in front of the central staircase which are covered with glass. So entering from the other side of the building will force you to walk around and enter the central staircase from the sides.

  4. Awesome analysis. Doing a research prject for a design of a public library and this project is an iconic example of a well designed/functional structure.
